Day 21 of the Yes We Care roadshow saw us back outside the place where the health worker cut outs made their first appearance; Auckland hospital. Two years ago during an industrial dispute between the DHB’s and PSA members, life-size health worker cut-outs appeared outside the hospital. This helped tip the balance of power in negotiations, securing a satisfactory agreement for members.
We also set up outside Greenlane hospital, where the first instalment of this batch of healthcare worker cut outs made their debut. This was in response to funding issues for the Auckland sexual health clinic where staff numbers were being cut and the service being restructured. This could lead to ineffective treatment being provided and increasing rates of sexually transmitted infections. The stigma around these conditions already made it difficult for people to seek help. Inadequate funding would mean when people did seek help, they may not get the care they needed.
We have one more stop in the Auckland region tomorrow in Orewa, before we head north to Whangarei. We’re in the final days of the Yes We Care roadshow, and we’re going all the way to Cape Reinga. This stage of the campaign may be coming to an end, but we’re still collecting stories. We’ve only just scratched the surface of the unmet need kiwis are facing. If you have a story, share it with us at YesWeCare.nz/share-your-story
