Nico’s travelog day 3: Oamaru and Timaru

Today was our second day of two actions in a row, and it’s only day three. We’ve been setting a cracking pace, having already covered 500kms. Today we were in the steampunk capital of the world; Oamaru, and then headed north to sunny Timaru. We’ve been hearing some incredibly powerful stories from local people and health workers who have resonated with the YesWeCare.nz roadshow. The stories do make what we’re doing worthwhile because you can only do so much with facts and figures.

People are intrigued by our 200 health worker cutouts, and often stop by when we’re in each location to ask what it’s all about. Invariably, everyone has a story to tell, some more harrowing than others, but all have a common theme; an understaffed and under-resourced health service. Healthcare is an issue that touches everyone, whatever their background, no matter one’s lifestyle or political perspective.

But for many people, our health system is failing them. People used to be proud of our health service, but Government underfunding has eroded it. And that’s what we’re trying to address with this campaign; we want all political parties to commit to restoring the underfunding of our health service and ensure adequate funding for a growing and ageing population.
